Over the years, I observed and discussed with HR practitioners in an on-going basis how training in general has impacted and influenced their bottom-line results. Overall, in average, the results are not up to many organizations’ expectations. Generally, the feedback from the training can be good or excellent, but participants have no time to implement; not sure how to implement the learning lessons effectively; or everything depends on own initiatives of participants.
As we know, many established organizations have changed the name from Training Department to Learning and Development Department. Why? Training itself is imparting the knowledge and skills only. Only during the development stage, when participants apply what they have learnt into actual implementation, it translates the knowledge into skill.
Which is more powerful? Knowledge or Skill? In school, my teacher once said: “Knowledge is Powerful”. That is true. However, in working life, “Knowledge is NOT Powerful”. Participants would show their curious face when I said this to them. The real power is from your acquired SKILL.
Thus, I have developed my mantra: “Knowledge is Important, but Skill is Powerful” which I shared in each training sessions consistently. The reason is simple. Knowledge will not influence or change individual or team performance. It is only the acquired skill that one applies it diligently and persistently that will influence and change the bottom-line results of the individual, team, and organizational performance.
In the last five years, I have started coaching session as well and put into practice what I preached. Overall, my 3-month or 6-month leadership and management development programs showed significant progress and breakthrough results. The little secret is that no matter how much knowledge you have, when it is not applied, implemented, executed, or translated into action, nothing will change in your KPI, performance and productivity. Let me use Pareto Rule to explain this. Training is just 20% of a learning process. Development such as coaching is 80% of the learning process. So, when training and coaching is combined, bottom-line results will be noticeable. The more effort and commitment one have, the better the final results.
